BMW ALPINA B5 BITURBO

Transmission

Power transmission in the BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo is taken care of by a new generation of the excellent 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC. Further refined and adapted to the performance characteristics of the high-torque V8 Bi-Turbo in collaboration with ZF, the transmission offers exceptional driving comfort in all situations.

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission combined with ALPINA typical high torque output at low engine speeds allows effortless, relaxed and economical driving in high gears and outstanding cruising comfort on long journeys. Simultaneously all components of the transmission such as the torque converter with lock-up clutch, the planetary wheel sets and the inner cooling are designed to specifically cope with the high torque output of the V8 Bi-Turbo engine. This means that no torque reduction is necessary during upshifts when utilising Launch Control or when using the sportiest configuration of the Manual Mode. This contributes significantly to the striking longitudinal dynamics of the new BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo, allowing for a sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.

The transmission also features the latest Comfort and Efficient Dynamics functions such as Connected Shift (use of navigation data for an anticipatory shift strategy based on traffic routing) and coasting (decoupling of the engine and transmission when coasting).

Transmission - Modes

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission with SWITCH-TRONIC offers three modes of operation to suit any driving situation.

In Automatic (D) Shift Mode the blend of eight speeds and high torque makes for super smooth gear changes only a torque converter can provide. Explicitly programmed for maximum comfort, the B5 Bi-Turbo glides effortlessly and efficiently at low rpm and high gears, offering unmatched cruising ability.

In Sport (S) Shift Mode the transmission becomes significantly more dynamic, gear changes are executed faster and feedback becomes more direct. The system allows for multi-simultaneous down-shifts in milliseconds, hereby the transmission will skip several gears depending on engine loads and rpm to select the most favourable gear for optimum acceleration.

The Manual (M) Shift Mode allows full control over the transmission. The ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC buttons are ergonomically mounted on the rear of the steering wheel, their actuation allowing the driver to shift up or down as required. A unique feature of the transmission software in Manual (M) Shift Mode in combination with the selection of Sport+ or DSC OFF Mode using the Driving Dynamics Control button is the deactivation of the automatic up-shift function. In this mode of operation the transmission will hold the selected gear up to maximum rpm’s (electronically limited) and will not automatically up-shift into the next gear. This is desirable in certain driving situations, for example during especially dynamic driving on roads with multiple tight hair-pin corners.

New test procedure WLTP

Stated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured pursuant to EU Regulation 715/2007 in its applicable version. From 1st of September 2018 the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) has replaced the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Regardless of the applied test procedure, it is currently still mandatory to state fuel consumption and CO2 emissions according to NEDC, hence stated values are determined based on the WLTP test procedure and are converted to NEDC for comparison purposes. Depending on your country, vehicle related taxes or other duties may be based on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data which differs from that stated here. The provision of additional fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as determined according to WLTP is currently voluntary until their provision becomes mandatory by law.

Further information on specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is provided by the ‚Leitfaden über den Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen‘ which can be obtained free of charge at all points of sale and from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT) or online https://www.dat.de/co2/.
