The foremost goal during the development of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 models was to push the envelope further and to improve upon the core values of the predecessor. Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology the new models offer an unrivalled driving experience in this segment characterised by power, torque, dynamic handling and comfort.

Building upon the excellence of the BMW 3.0-liter straight-six engine with quad-turbocharging and common-rail high-pressure direct injection, the drivetrain of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 delivers a power output of 285 kW (388 hp). This is available over a wide bandwidth ranging from
4000 to 5000 rpm. The maximum torque of 770 Nm is already available from just 1750 rpm and up to 3000 rpm. The resulting performance figures are impressive, the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and have a top speed of 267 km/h and 268 km/h respectively – meaning they are currently fastest-in-segment!

In combination with ALPINA CLASSIC 22“ forged wheels reduced top speed by approximately 5 km/h.

The permanent two-stage turbocharging system with four turbochargers offers maximum performance. It comprises two large low-pressure stages operating in parallel and two small high-pressure stages with variable turbine geometry which also operate in parallel. As a result, power delivery is smooth, effortless, and – for a diesel – unusually dynamic over the entire rpm range.

More output requires more cooling. The high-performance cooling package of the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 is designed for maximum effectiveness. Large volume coolers and optimised coolant hosing allow high throughput rates. An indirect intercooler set-up keeps air intake distances short. A primary air-water cooler located in front of the engine supplies a large volume water-air intercooler. Additionally three external coolers and a transmission oil cooler guarantee thermodynamic stability even under highest loads.

The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 capitalise on the technical potential of BMW’s xDrive system and its intelligent and dynamic distribution of drive power which continuously and fully variable distributes torque between the front and rear axle within milliseconds for maximum traction and control. The programming of the torque distribution control, which is interconnected with the Dynamic Stability Control and the engine management system, is performance-oriented and it increases driving agility and dynamics markedly – especially under lateral acceleration – while maintaining balanced and neutral handling.

Both the BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 come with an electronically controlled active rear limited slip differential. This improves traction when driving dynamically by ensuring that slip-induced losses are minimised and torque is distributed effectively to the wheel with the most grip at any given point in time. This further enhances driving dynamics, even in combination with all-wheel drive, and operates in conjunction with the ALPINA specific, rear-wheel biased, torque distribution.

For ALPINA, low consumption and emissions have always been a high priority, often resulting in pioneering solutions first introduced in small series production. The SUPERKAT – an electronically heated metal catalytic converter – is a great example, meaning NOx and CO emissions were 80 % less than required by regulations in 1996. The BMW ALPINA XD3 and XD4 feature the latest in exhaust gas treatment technology. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, a SCR catalytic converter with aqueous urea solution injection (AdBlue®) reduces emissions to a minimum. The AdBlue® tank volume is 20 litres which typically equates to an average range of 10.000 km.

Fuel consumption measured according to the new and more realistic WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicle Test Procedure) is 6.9 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 183 g/km.

New test procedure WLTP

Stated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured pursuant to EU Regulation 715/2007 in its applicable version. From 1st of September 2018 the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) has replaced the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Regardless of the applied test procedure, it is currently still mandatory to state fuel consumption and CO2 emissions according to NEDC, hence stated values are determined based on the WLTP test procedure and are converted to NEDC for comparison purposes. Depending on your country, vehicle related taxes or other duties may be based on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data which differs from that stated here. The provision of additional fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as determined according to WLTP is currently voluntary until their provision becomes mandatory by law.

Further information on specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is provided by the ‚Leitfaden über den Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen‘ which can be obtained free of charge at all points of sale and from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT) or online
